Item-Level RFID and ePedigree: From Tag to Traceability

Item-level RFID gives an individual product, package or component a machine-readable identity. An ePedigree adds a chain of custody: who created the record, which event occurred, when it occurred and how the next party can verify the history. The distinction matters because a tag alone identifies an object; a trustworthy pedigree depends on controlled data and processes.
Core data model
A practical system normally records an identifier, product or lot reference, location, timestamp, business event and responsible party. Receiving, commissioning, packing, shipping, dispensing, return and disposal are different events and should not be collapsed into a single “scanned” status.
Where programs fail
- Tags are applied before the identifier is correctly associated with the item.
- Readers capture duplicate or stray reads and the middleware treats them as confirmed movement.
- Partners use different event vocabularies or clocks.
- Authentication is claimed even though the system only checks an unprotected serial number.
Designing for verification
Use controlled issuance, role-based access, event validation and an audit trail. For higher-risk products, combine RFID with secure tag features, tamper evidence, signed records or a backend challenge-response process. Establish how a human operator handles a missing, duplicated, damaged or quarantined identifier.
