How RFID can support product authentication without confusing identification with proof of authenticity.
Quick answer
A basic RFID identifier can improve traceability but is not automatically counterfeit-proof. Effective authentication combines secure identifiers or cryptographic features with controlled issuance, backend verification, tamper evidence and an exception process.
Identification is not authentication
A readable serial number may be copied. The system must decide whether the credential is genuine, valid, correctly associated and appearing in a plausible supply-chain context.

Protect the database
Attackers may target issuance systems, APIs or user accounts instead of the tag. Apply least privilege, logging, key management and revocation procedures.
Design the verification experience
A check should return an actionable result: valid, already consumed, recalled, suspicious or unavailable. Avoid revealing data that helps an attacker enumerate identifiers.
Test adversarial cases
Include cloned identifiers, removed tags, replayed checks, offline operation and compromised accounts in acceptance testing.
