Confirm the failure before changing hardware
Record the tag model, frequency, reader, antenna, cable, power setting, item material, distance and orientation. Test a known-good tag and reader port to separate a tag fault from a system fault.
The most common causes
RFID performance is a complete RF system problem, not only a tag problem.
- Wrong frequency or air-interface standard
- Metal or liquid detuning a general-purpose inlay
- Tag polarization misaligned with the antenna
- Insufficient reader power or excessive cable loss
- Reader sensitivity, session or inventory settings
- Dense-reader interference and environmental reflections
Fix order that saves time
Move the tag into free air and shorten the distance. Rotate it through 90 degrees, test another antenna port, inspect connectors, confirm regional frequency settings, and only then change antennas or tag models.
Test on the real item
A tag that reads in free air may fail when attached to metal, liquid, carbon-rich material or a human body. Use the production mounting method and test across realistic angles, speeds and item populations.
When to use an on-metal tag
Use a purpose-built on-metal tag when the asset surface strongly detunes a conventional UHF label. Spacer foam can help prototypes, but production designs should use a tag rated for the surface and environment.
